A Shaded Pathway in Plazuela Zaragoza

The historic Plazuela Zaragoza stands as one of the oldest, most vibrant community public squares nestled inside the traditional downtown district of Mazatlán.

While its name indicates a small square (plazuela), it actually spans a remarkably large city block. This beautiful square is celebrated for hosting iconic cultural events, including the weekly seasonal Mazatlán Organic Farmers Market (Mercado Orgánico) and lively traditional street dances.

The park is surrounded by lush, beautifully manicured botanical gardens packed with tropical flowers, emerald lawns, and towering shade trees. Standing proudly at the absolute center of the plaza is an ornate, multi-story historic central gazebo (kiosko) built in 1940. This architectural gem features a municipal office on the ground level, a beautiful winding spiral staircase, ornate support columns, and magnificent exposed woodwork running beneath its sweeping ceiling canopy.

The plaza is centrally positioned only a few short blocks inland from the scenic coastal seawall and the vibrant street corner where the historic Shrimp Ladies trade their fresh daily catches—making it the perfect, breezy walking bridge connecting the historic center to the Pacific shore.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The famous Mercado Orgánico de Mazatlán (MOM) is held seasonally every Saturday morning from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, running from November through April. It gathers more than 30 local organic farmers, bakers, and artisans who offer chemical-free produce, fresh honey, vegan treats, gourmet cheeses, and handmade cosmetics.

Every single Thursday afternoon (typically starting around 5:00 PM or 5:30 PM depending on the season), the square hosts the traditional Jueves de Danzón. This free public event gathers hundreds of local seniors, residents, and winter travelers to dance traditional danzón, swing, and romantic ballads. The local DIF municipal agency provides music, seating, and a highly festive, welcoming community atmosphere.

Originally established prior to 1862, the site was known as the Plazuela del Puerto Viejo (Old Port Square) and was primarily utilized for military drills by soldiers stationed at the nearby Cuartel Colorado. In October 1862, the square was renamed in honor of General Ignacio Zaragoza following his famous victory at the Battle of Puebla.
